Grade 3rd Grade           Subject: Earth’s Biosystems            Date: 3/3/09                       Teacher: Brittany Burns

                                                                        Level:

Objective

Monday: The objective of this lesson is for students to use researching skills to become familiar with the Earth’s biosystems. Students will be able to identify and describe one major biome of the world by creating a biome mobile which portrays its animals, plants, climate, land forms, and bodies of water.

Tuesday: Students will use their knowledge on biosystems, along with books, to plan a vacation to one of Earth’s biomes. Students will be grouped into pairs and assigned a specific biome. Students will explain the places they will visit in their biome, how they will get there, how they will dress according to the weather, and what they will see while on vacation (animals, plants, landforms, etc.) Students will then be put into groups of four and they will share their vacation plans with their group.

Wednesday: Students will develop plans to design a biome for a zoo animal. They will use their knowledge, as well as books and the internet, to learn about a particular animal and the biome it is located in. They will design and create a picture of their animals biome.

Thursday: Students will create biome murals.

Students will express their knowledge about different biomes by creating a mural which will express the Earth’s different biomes and their components. The mural will then be displayed in the hallway to share with the school. Pass out to the class old nature/outdoor related magazines. Instruct the class that they are

going to make a class biome collage. They need to look through the magazines and cut

out examples of the different biomes. Either collect them all and display on one poster or

a poster for each biome. Hang them in the hall to share with the whole school!

Friday: Students will be taking a field trip to the Albuquerque Zoo and Aquarium. Students will be selected into groups, each given a camera. They will observe and document the many different animals, plants, insects, and the biomes which they thrive in. When students return to class the next week, they will begin creating a powerpoint slide show to present to their classmates.

Education Standards Addressed

Monday-Friday:

Standard 2- Benchmark 2-D- Performance Objective 1

Hook

Monday: I will read students a book called What is a Biome? By Bobby Kalman.

Tuesday: I will read students a book called Explore The Desert by Kay Jackson.

Wednesday: Students will listen to the song “Biomes” by Kenny Hood

Thursday: Students will watch clips from a movie called Biomes Series .

Assessment

Monday: Students will be assessed by the accuracy of their biome mobiles.

Tuesday: Students will be assessed by using their written paragraphs and cooperation working in a group.

Wednesday: Students will be assessed by completion of work and accuracy of their biome design plans.

Thursday: Students will be assessed by participation in creating the biosystems mural.

Friday: Students will be assessed by participation and also by their powerpoint slide shows.
