“Fungi”

Date:

Teacher: Brittany Burns

Objective: Students will construct a “mold” experiment which will provide different types of fungi used to make observations and develop simple questions. Students will observe the simple properties of matter by creating a daily “mold journal” in which students will use magnified glasses to observe the changes of their mold. They will record the mold through a daily observation entry and by creating pictures of their mold. Students will increase their computer skills by using given internet sites that explains the resources needed for mold and other fungi to grow and thrive. Students will also learn how to compare different types of mold by looking at given pictures of fungi. Students will comprehend that there are many types of fungi by observing and describing their similarities and differences.

Education Standards Addressed:

Strand 1-Content Standard 1-Make observations, develop simple questions, and make comparisons of familiar situations.

Benchmark II.1- Know that simple investigations so not always turn out as planned.

Benchmark III.1- Use numbers and mathematical language to describe phenomena.

Strand II- Benchmark I.2-Describe simple properties of matter (hardness, flexibility, transparency, etc.).

Materials/ Resources: Classroom textbook, various books, pictures of fungi, internet site about fungi, clear container with lid, tape, water, left over food (such as vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese, cake, etc.), and a magnified glass.

   Focus

Prior Knowledge:  Students will need background knowledge in how to record observation and data using pictures. Also, students will need to be able to communicate observations with other students. Students must be able to observe and describe relative sizes and characteristics of objects (bigger, smaller, brighter, etc.), use senses (smell, vision, and touch) to describe and distinguish different fungi.

Prerequisite Skills:  Students need a small amount of computer skills, they must be introduced to the magnified glass,  appropriate reading skills for content and information, appropriate writing skills for journal observations and pictures, they must understand the importance of being sanitary (washing hands) when working with mold.

 Practice/Assess

Guided Practice:  Students will use their senses to observe different fungi. They will be shown how to construct a “mold” experiment. Students will also be shown how to safely navigate through an internet site. Students will also be shown how to gently handle each plastic container of mold, to ensure that none of them open up.

Assessment:  Students will be assessed by observations, journals, completion of handouts, completions of pictures, and self and group assessment of work.

  Closure

Wrap Up: Students will celebrate their final day of the unit by finishing with a “mushroom snack” (optional) followed by a brief “show and tell” of students different mold experiments.

Independent Practice: Students will independently read about fungi, look at fungi pictures, and draw fungi pictures. Students will group together and share results.
