CONCEPT LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

Name: Brittany Burns                                                       Grade: 2nd

Subject: Math          Topic: Exploring Polygons, Arrays, and Attributes

1.    NEW MEXICO ACADEMIC STANDARD(S)

-4.G.1.1

-4.G.1.2

2. OBJECTIVE(S)

·         Children will identify pattern-block shapes.

·         Children will investigate relationships and properties of polygons with geoboards.

·         Children will construct snowflakes and try to recognize different shapes that make up their snowflake.

3. LESSON SUMMARY

·         Hook: I asked students to find shapes around the room and draw pictures of the items that they found.

·         Math Message: I asked students to write the names of the Pattern Block Template shapes on an Exit Slip. Ex. Hexagon, circle, triangle, trapezoid, rhombus, and a square.

·         Students will use geoboards to complete Geoboard Design Worksheet.

·         Students will create and identify shapes by completing the A Line Segment Design Worksheet.

·         Students will wrap up the lesson by creating a snowflake and distinguishing different shapes located in the snowflake by using the Snowflake Template.

4. RESOURCES

·                Paper

·                    Pencils

·                    Crayons/Markers

·                    Scissors

·                    Straightedge

·                    Geoboards

·                    Rubberbands

·                    Math Message

·                    Line Segment Design Worksheet

·                    Geoboard Designs Worksheet

·                    Snowflake Template

5. PROCEDURES

a. READINESS (ENGAGEMENT, interest, and relevance)

·         I will ask students to identify different shapes that they may see in the classroom.

·         I will explain that there are shapes everywhere we look and the majority of the time we don’t even recognize them.

·         Students will use their pattern-block templates to practice drawing and exploring the different shapes.

·         As a whole group discussion, students will discuss the differences between the shapes located on their pattern-block templates.

·         I will introduce the geoboards and give students directions and example on how to use them properly and appropriately.

b. FOCUS OF LESSON (EXPLAIN, explore, and extend)

·         Students will be given about five minutes to explore their geoboards.

·         Students will explore and create shapes by following the directions given on their Geoboard Designs Worksheet.

·         Students will then use a straight edge and crayons to create a design using the Line Segment Design Worksheet.

c. CLOSURE (WRAP UP and review learning)

·         Students will use the Snowflake Template to create and decorate their own snowflakes. They are expected to find and document (by writing down on a piece of paper) different shapes located in their snowflakes.

·         Students will then share with partners the different shapes that they located in their snowflakes.

·         I will collect worksheets and assess them based on their comprehension of assignments.
