Standards/Benchmarks:

Teaching/Learning Process

                        Sell the Story

Discuss how you will sell the story.

-I will talk to students about how nature affects seeds and the growth of plants. In what ways do they think that the weather effects the growth of a plant? Have any students ever planted seeds and watched them transform into plants? How is today’s weather affecting plants outside?

What types of introductions or questions will you ask prior to the reading of the story?

-“Can anyone tell me what plants and flowers look like at this time of the year?” “How do plants look in the summer, winter, fall, and spring?” “What in nature helps seeds grow into plants?” “Can you name a few parts of a plant?” “In what places can plants not grow?”

                        Vocabulary

What vocabulary might you focus on in this story?

-rays, drowns, sail, drifts, roots, looms, pod.

How will you introduce the vocabulary words?

-I will introduce vocabulary words by explaining their definition while I am reading the story.

                        Comprehension

                        What paraphrasing will you do?

-Paraphrasing would not be needed for this book.

What think aloud will you focus on?

-Prediction: “I wonder if the seed grows into a plant?” “I wonder how the seed reacts to different weather/seasons?” “I wonder if the seed can turn into a plant in cold weather?” “I wonder where the seed comes from?” “I wonder which season plants like the best?”

                        Supplemental Activities

- Students will go outside and look at plants. They will be encouraged to try to think of the different changes the plant has gone through, starting out just as a seed. Students will then draw pictures of the life cycle of the plant.

                        Accommodations

-I will ensure that all students are comfortable and able to learn from and enjoy the story without any distractions.

                        Assessment/Education

-By reading the students faces and observing their reactions to the story, I will be able to check the students comprehension of the story. I also will check the understanding of the story’s basic themes by the supplemental activity of observing and drawing.
