Writing Lesson Plan

Name: Brittany Burns                                                                         Date: 11/5/08

Grade Level: 3nd

Objective(s): The objective of this lesson plan is to get students thinking about how adjectives make writing more interesting.

Teaching/Learning Process

I: I will begin the class by asking students if they know what Adjectives are. I will then explain adjectives and give some examples of adjectives on the board. I will explain to students that I have a story about a dog named Mikey and that I feel that it needs to be “spiced up” to make it more interesting. I will ask students, “ Do you think that using adjectives in my story might make it more interesting?” I will explain that I am having a hard time thinking of adjectives and that I have just enough nouns in my sentence for every student to modify.

II: My lesson plan will be focused on the importance of using adjectives in writing.

III: I will finish the mini-lesson by reading the story that the students modified about a dog named Mikey.

IV: I will accommodate students who do not understand what adjectives are by giving them extra help. I could ask them questions like, “what color was the dog?”, “What kind of dog?”, “How was the dog feeling?”, etc. (based on their sentence).

V: After the students help me write my story, I could ask them to write about an animal they own or one that they wished they owned. I would ask them to use as many adjectives to describe their animal. They would be asked to underline all of the adjectives in the story. They could then illustrate their story. They could also go further and create a big book with all of their different stories.

VI: I would assess students on their participation.
