I am reading the book Join In: Multiethnic Short Stories by Outstanding Writers for Young Adults. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with how good this book is so far! I am about half way through with reading the book and I have enjoyed every single short story. I love how the characters of the stories are each so different yet they all face so many of the same problems as minority teenagers and young adults in America. Not only are the characters dealing with racism or prejudices against their color of skin or culture, they are also faced with typical adolescent struggles such as dating, college, and wanting to follow their dreams (regardless of what their parents have to say about it). I obviously know what it feels like to be a teenager in American but I do not know what it feels like to be faced with the struggles of being a minority on top of all of those teenage hormones. This book is a fresh insight on issues that I was not faced with as an adolescent and I feel a lot of compassion towards these characters.
